John Laurino, 47, was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 23, the Washington Township Police Department said in a news release.

Glassboro police were asked to conduct a wellness check at around 10:33 a.m. for a man potentially at an address in Washington Township. The man reportedly threatened to shoot employees at a Glassboro business.

Around the same time, a Washington Township officer at Orchard Valley Middle School and 911 dispatchers received several reports of Laurino running through traffic on Pitman Downer Road. Investigators said Laurino also exposed himself and punched cars.

Laurino was detained and police learned he was also the suspect in the business shooting threat. He pushed an officer and was taken into custody.

Washington Township's ambulance squad arrived to transport Laurino to a hospital. He kicked a paramedic while being secured in the ambulance and was eventually brought to the hospital.

Orchard Valley Middle School was put in "secure" mode during the incident. All students and staff were kept in the building with exterior doors locked.

Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik said this allowed classes to continue as normal as police investigated the possible threat.

"We want to assure our community that all students, teachers, aides, and staff at OVMS remained safe throughout the incident," said Chief Patrick Gurcsik. "We are fortunate to have 14 school police officers assigned to our schools, who provide a critical layer of safety and security every day. Their presence is a great benefit to ensuring the well-being of our students and staff."

Laurino was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.
